How it works

  1. Post for free

Say what you need, where and when. It takes a couple of minutes and costs nothing.

  2. Compare offers

Local providers offer to help. Look at their listings, photos, badges and reviews, and ask questions first.

  3. Pay safely

Pay through Needsey once you agree. The money is held until the job is confirmed done, then released to the provider.

Before you book

  • Most electrical, gas and plumbing work must be done by a licensed professional. Ask for their registration number and check it on the public register.
  • Check whether your job is restricted building work, which needs a Licensed Building Practitioner, and whether it needs council consent.
  • Agree what is included, such as materials, rubbish removal and tidy-up, before work starts.

About Handyman & Trades in Auckland

Every home has a list of small jobs that never quite get done. On Needsey you can find local handymen and tradespeople for repairs, maintenance and bigger projects: fixing doors and gates, hanging shelves, fencing, painting, building work, gardens and more. Post the job with a few photos and your area, and local providers can offer to help or ask questions first. For work that needs a licence, such as electrical, gas, plumbing or restricted building work, check the provider holds the right one.

Questions about handymen and tradespeople

What affects the cost of a handyman?

How long the job takes, materials, access, travel and whether a second person is needed. Photos in your job help providers understand it before they offer.

Do I need a licensed tradesperson?

For most electrical, gas and plumbing work, yes: it must be done by someone licensed or registered for it, with only a few small jobs exempt. Restricted building work needs a Licensed Building Practitioner. Many small repairs and maintenance jobs don't need a licence. If you're unsure, ask the provider which licence applies and check it.

Does the job need council consent?

Some building work does. Many small jobs are exempt under the Building Act. If you're unsure, check with your council before work starts.

Who supplies the materials?

It varies. Agree whether the provider brings materials or you buy them, and how that is charged.

Should I ask about insurance?

For larger jobs it is worth asking whether the provider has public liability insurance.

How does payment work on Needsey?

You pay through Needsey once you and a provider have agreed the job. Nothing is charged before then. The money is held until the job is confirmed done: by you, or automatically if you haven't confirmed or pressed Not done yet within 5 days of the provider marking it finished. It is released to the provider 24 hours after that, unless a dispute is raised in that time.

Are providers on Needsey checked?

Every provider completes an ID check before taking jobs. Some work needs more: a Ministry of Justice criminal record check for babysitting, companionship for older people and school tutoring, and a licence and insurance for electrical, plumbing, gas and building work. Listings show badges for the checks a provider has passed. For other work that needs a licence, ask the provider for theirs.

What if something goes wrong?

If the provider marks the job finished and it isn't, press Not done yet and say what's missing. Once a job is confirmed done, you can raise a dispute from the job's chat during the 24 hours before the payment is released, with photos or other evidence. A real person at Needsey reviews it and decides whether the payment goes to the provider or back to you. This doesn't take away your rights under the Consumer Guarantees Act.
